In the boundless, ever-changing night sky, few sights are as ancient, accessible, and influential as the Moon. For communitarians, observing the phases of the Moon serves as a gateway to aligning with the natural cycles that shape our world and our lives. As we look up to the night sky, the Moon’s steady rhythm and dependable cycle become both a mirror and a mentor, illuminating paths of understanding and deeper connection to ourselves, our fellow eco-socio-economic activists scattered across the earth, and THE MAJESTIC COSMOS.

Observing the Phases of the Moon, invites those progressing along the path to Deep Union to recognize the Moon’s phases as well as honour their effects on the Earth and also the subtle influences these phases have on our own mental and physical rhythms. From gardening to personal development, sleep patterns to energy levels, the Moon’s phases remind us that we are part of a larger, interconnected web of life. Just as the Moon shines by reflecting the light of the Sun, so too can we reflect the “light” we bring to the world through the eco-social lifestyle practices of LIVING NUTRITION, PERSONAL PROGRESSION, ASSOCIATION, LIBERATED LOVE, LIVING SIMPLY, DEEP UNION and RIGHT LIVELIHOOD.

Understanding the Phases of the Moon

The Moon’s phases—from New Moon to Full Moon and back again—embody a cyclical journey that is as natural and essential as breathing. The Moon’s light, waxes – building to fullness, and then wanes, before retreating into darkness, mirroring cycles of growth, reflection, and renewal. All in all, there are 8 distinct phases of the moon, with each phase inviting us to observe, act, and reflect in potent ways that combine to support personal development.

New Moon

A time for new beginnings, introspection, planting seeds – both literal and metaphorical. The majority of novice as well as longer-term communitarian associates, utilize this phase of the moon to consider new goals or intentions, taking time to be ‘still’ – to envisage current and future contributions to local and regional globally networked communitarian union, eco-social projects. This phase aligns with the Observance of Conscious Creation, guiding us to dream big dreams and to envision realities that may seem impossible at first.

This is the perfect time to use mind-maps as a tool for capturing these expansive visions -charting out bold aspirations, such as establishing ‘common’ wealth Food Forests that can nourish generations to come, or establishing MAKE HUBS and Sanctuaries for previously enslaved animals to enjoy a life of liberty while also nourishing the land by their very existence.

Waxing Crescent

This phase brings an energy of momentum and nurturing, which is the ideal time for taking first steps, nurturing newly planted ideas, and cultivating potential. It is a phase that aligns with the Observance of Progress & Productivity that transforms lofty ideals into tangible plans. This stage involves the discipline of planning, fortified by the recognition that even the wildest visions can take root and flourish if nurtured with intention.

Aligning with the communitarian principles of mutual aid and shared stewardship, we turn our focus to communal resources and collaborative efforts. Here, every small, intentional action contributes to a larger mission – whether planting the first seeds of a FOOD FOREST or establishing sanctuaries for rescued farm animals that reflect our values of compassion and CONSERVATION that include the practical application of recycling, restoring and repurposing.

The sky truly is the limit when our visions are aligned with the Common Good, and when we observe the principle of aligning each step with Collaborative Missions, we create a ripple effect that brings our dreams closer to fruition with each Waxing Crescent phase.

First Quarter

At this stage, the Moon inspires us to take action to overcome obstacles. It is a potent time to address challenges and obstructions that stand in the way of bringing our plans to fruition. Observing the night sky, is the perfect time for communitarians to focus on productive outcomes by putting into practice Gestalt Proving strategies that help to strengthen the eco-warrior character trait of courage. Applying concerted effort at this time is sure to achieve progress through tackling the hard tasks backed by SELF-DISCIPLINE and dedication to PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT that make accomplishing goals, possible.

Waxing Gibbous

This is a phase of refinement and preparation, a time to hone details and strive toward completion by making every day count toward achieving our life’s purpose. It represents perseverance and commitment to the communal vision, where each action is intentional and aligns with the larger goals previously set in motion. The Waxing Gibbous phase encourages those progressing toward taking their place within the larger structures of Changemaker Union’s, to dig deeper – to refine our approaches to ensure that the foundations we have built are solid, and aligned with our core values.

In this phase, we draw from the Observance of MISSION. We acknowledge that every choice and every step we take, carries the weight of our collective purpose. It is not enough to act with good intentions; we must act with clear alignment to our shared mission. This is a time of commitment to detail, to re-examine our plans, and to ensure that the integrity of our actions matches the ideals we uphold. Our mission is our guiding light that keeps us on course as we navigate the complexities of TRANSITIONING TO ‘RICH BY ASSOCIATION’ SHARE ECONOMY through learning the ropes of participatory governance of held in common – RESOURCES such as food and water, accommodation, clothing, health and dental care, transport, vocational skilling, rest and recreation . As we move closer to completion, we remember that the mission is not just a goal to reach, rather it is a guiding principle to embody.

Therefore, Waxing Gibbous phase is a time to fine-tuning our efforts, ensuring that we are not merely busy but productively engaged in work that brings us closer to fulfilling our shared mission. It is a call to perseverance, to push through obstacles, and to trust that our diligence and careful attention will result in a more robust and resilient outcome.

Full Moon

At its fullest, the Moon bathes everything in a radiant light, illuminating the path previously walked and the progress achieved. This is a time of clarity, Gratitude, and Communal Celebration, where the results of our efforts come into full view. The Full Moon represents a peak time to pause, reflect, and recognize the collective achievements that have emerged from our shared ‘toiling’. It is a time to honour the dedication and commitment that have carried us through previous phases, and to see how individual contributions have woven together into a tapestry of collaborative success in creating the global network of Rich By Association ‘common’ wealth facilities born from the humble beginnings of the Communitarian Union Learning Hub’s On-line workshop series.

For communitarians, the Full Moon is an ideal moment to come together and celebrate both small and large victories. It is a phase to express our appreciation for what we have accomplished and for the relationships, collaborations, and shared experiences that have made those accomplishments possible. It is a time for sharing our knowledge, skills and lived experiences on the Eco-social on-line Learning hub platform and the Communitarian Union Group Facebook page. Through these seemingly small contributions of our time, talent and resources, others may learn from our trials and triumphs. Taking the time to compile a video or written account of ‘how, when, where and who’ is involved in establishing LOVE-IN-ACTION FRIENDSHIP CIRCLES connected to other regional globally-networked eco-social projects, sows the seeds of massive change.

By passing on ‘the recipe for success’ through detailing ‘what works and what doesn’t, even 1st year communitarian associates can become a beacon of inspiration for others to start similar projects that have the potential to positively impact the health and economic security of people, together with The Life & Liberty of All Creatures. the life and liberty of all creatures great and small, as well as implement Conservation projects that restore and extend the habitable reaches of earth – our only home.

This phase is about transparency – letting  the light of ‘Know Thyself’ shine on both the joys and the challenges of our journey, so that we can celebrate with authenticity and integrity.

This phase encourages emotional and physical release – a letting go, which makes it the ideal time to let go of everything that no longer serves us. For those transitioning to living simply, the last quarter is set aside to DECLUTTER & DOWN-SIZE, and thoroughly clean our personal and shared living spaces to prepare to merge into DEEP UNION, fostering a sense of liberation that prepares Associates for the new cycles of lifestyle and love-style that lay ahead.

The cycle draws to a close, inviting quiet contemplation and rest. This is a time for winding down and preparing for the next new moon—a phase for deeper self-care and preparation for renewal. The Waning Crescent encourages us to pause and reflect on the journey of the past month, recognizing both the triumphs and the challenges. It is a gentle invitation to connect with the natural rhythms of both the Earth and the Cosmos, allowing ourselves to slow down and match the quieter, more introspective energy of this phase.

During this time, Contemplation & Unity with Earthly and Cosmic Elements encourages us to take a step back from active striving and engage in practices that promote inner peace and harmony. This might mean spending time in nature – engaging in forms of active meditation under the stars, such as wild dance, singing or playing an instrument, or simply allowing ourselves to be present in the stillness of the moment. It is an opportunity to feel the earth beneath our feet, and to honour the subtle yet profound connections we have with the cosmos. As we tune into the quieter energy of this phase, we cultivate a deeper sense of alignment with the cycles of nature, recognizing that rest and renewal are as essential to our well-being as action and achievement.

Self-care takes on a heightened significance during the Waning Crescent, as we intentionally engage in practices that restore our energy and nurture our well-being. The Moon’s constant, rhythmic light invites communitarians to become like the Moon, reflecting light back to the world kindness, collaboration, and eco-social alignment.

In Tolstoian fashion, we can cultivate a practice of reflection at the close of each day or cycle, assessing the light we have shared and ways we might deepen our contributions. By aligning with the Moon, we learn to dance with the natural world, bringing “light” to all aspects of life, from personal intention to collective progress—illuminating the path of unity for ourselves and future communitarians dedicated to forging a path to perpetual peace through sharing all with all.
